 This study addresses the adequacy of sockets, wrenches, and torque  adapters conforming to AS954 to wrench 12 point fasteners with wrenching  configurations conforming to AS870C. Reported wrenching problems with  smaller sizes are investigated through examining the combined tolerances  on the fasteners and wrenches, conducting torque testing on typical high  strength lock nuts. Possible solutions to correct these wrenching  problems are presented.

 This SAE Standard covers the mechanical and material requirements for  eight property classes of steel, externally threaded metric fasteners in  sizes M1.6 through M36, inclusive, and suitable for use in automotive and  related applications. Products included are bolts, screws, studs, U-bolts, preassembled  screw and washer assemblies (sems), and products manufacturered the same  as sems except without washer. Products not covered are tapping screws, thread-rolling screws, and  self- drilling screws. Mechanical and material requirements for these  products are covered in other SAE documents. The term stud as referred to herein, applies to a cylindrical rod of  moderate length, threaded on either one or both ends or throughout its  entire length. It does not apply to headed, collared, or similar products  which are more closely characterized by requirements shown herein for  bolts. For specification purposes, this document treats U-bolts as studs.  Thus, wherever the world studs appears, U-bolts is also implied. U-bolts  covered by this document are those used primarily in the suspension and  related areas of vehicles. (Designers should recognize that the U  configuration may not sustant a load equivalent to two bolts or studs of  the same size and grade; thus actual load-carrying capacity of U-bolts  should be determined by saddle load tests.)

 This SAE Information Report is provided as an advisory guide. Careful  discretion as to application is recommended. The content has been  presented as accurately as possible, but responsiblity for its  application lies with the user. It covers finishes applied to fasteners  and related topics, corrosion resistance, lubricity, electrical  grounding, ultraviolet light, and embrittlement. Table 1 lists these coatings and their properties so that finish  selection can be reasonably made in accordance with known and anticipated  fastener assembly applications. Application of protective coatings will affect fastener dimensions.  This is especially critical for the thread fit of mating parts because  the pitch diameter increases by four times the coating thickness.  Explanation is covered in Section 5.

Tension Indicating Washer Tightening Method for Fasteners
 This SAE Recommended Practice covers installation and inspection  methods for fasteners which are tensioned using Tension Indicating  Washers (TIWs) as a means to ensure that adequate tension is developed in  mechanically fastened joints.  Figure 1 depicts a typical TIW, and Figure  2 depicts a fastener assembly with a TIW before and after tensioning. This document describes practices for the use of TIWs which are  typically produced for use with SAE J429 Grade 5 and Grade 8 fasteners or  their metric counterparts, although the same principals hold true for  bolted joints using other fasteners.  Users are advised to contact a  manufacturer for advice on use of these products before using them with  special fasteners or applications. This document defines and illustrates preferred installation and  inspection methodologies. The contents of this document are presented as  accurately as possible; however, responsibility for its application lies  with the user.

This document also covers the  performance requirements of the locking feature of the insert which will  retain United ANSI B1.1 (UN Profile) or AS8879 (UNJ Profile) external  threaded parts. To establish the performance requirements of helical coil locking  screw thread inserts for use in fastening systems utilizing a lubricant  which induces a low coefficient of friction between insert and fastener.

 This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the requirements for  AS3504 and AS3505 thin wall self-locking inserts made from a corrosion  and heat resistant, age hardenable nickel base alloy of the type  identified under the Unified Number System as UNS N07718. Classification: tensile strength at room temperature 185 ksi minimum  test temperature of parts 1025 degrees F. The method of locking the insert into parent material to resist  rotation to be by means of swaging the insert knurled collar into the  prebroached knurl of the parent material. Primarily for use in aircraft engines application up to approximately  1025 degrees F where an insert with a self-locking feature is required at  elevated temperature, having excellent tensile strength and resistant to  relaxation.
